The Continued Significance of Paris is Burning

Movies Like Paris Is Burning

While many strides have been made in pop culture representation of queer people since Paris is Burning debuted, this film remains an important reminder of the challenges that remain. Despite its broad appeal, the movie raises questions of collaboration, exploitation and documentary ethics.

Featuring voguing legends like Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Venus Xtravaganza, Jennie Livingston’s groundbreaking portrait of drag ballroom culture expanded the nonfiction-filmmaking tradition.

The Ball Scene

The movie Paris Is Burning is a landmark documentary that chronicles the world of ballroom culture in New York City during the 1980s. The film is a powerful and honest representation of the struggles that LGBT people face in America. It also highlights the resilience of the individuals involved. This film is an important addition to the nonfiction-filmmaking tradition, expanding upon the work of such groundbreaking practitioners as Frederick Wiseman, the Maysles brothers, and Camille Billops.

Livingston stumbled upon the subject of the film almost by accident, when she witnessed young drag queens vogueing (a stylized dance technique) in Washington Square Park. She was immediately drawn in, and the film became her life’s work. The film includes interviews with a number of big personalities, including Paris Dupree, Willi Ninja (the godfather of voguing), and Venus Xtravaganza, who was murdered by a john while the film was being made.

The dance competitions portrayed in the film encourage bombastic self-love and experimentation with gender identity, but they are also sites of fierce competition. Ballroom “Houses” are run by leaders known as Mothers and Fathers, who provide shelter, guidance, and status to their members.

The Kiki Scene

Any film that gives audiences a look into a world that’s foreign to them runs the risk of feeling overly voyeuristic. But Kiki, a new documentary directed by Sara Jordeno and co-written by Twiggy Pucci Garcon, avoids this trap, providing a confident, trustworthy glimpse at a community whose lives are far from simple.

The film follows a group of members from the Kiki scene, a subset of the ballroom community that revolves around voguing competitions and community outreach projects. The members, who are organized into “houses,” are dedicated to prioritizing mental health, fighting homelessness and educating their peers about HIV prevention, among other things.

These efforts are bolstered by the fact that they’re able to hone their craft in a place where they can express themselves freely. But for many of these Kiki kids, the scene isn’t just a hobby; it’s a way to survive. The movie offers a timely update on a world that has yet to receive the full respect it deserves.

The AIDS Crisis

In the midst of an AIDS crisis that was devastating communities of color, Jennie Livingston’s Paris Is Burning was both a critical and commercial success. In 2016, it was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Its legacy lives on in TV shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race and Pose. The film is an important document of ballroom culture, a world where the queer community came to express themselves. Its participants were full of big personalities including drag queen Paris Dupree, the founder of the annual ball that inspired the documentary’s name, and Willi Ninja, considered the godfather of voguing.

Many of the participants have died since the film was released, including Angie Xtravaganza, co-founder and “Mother” of the House of Xtravaganza, who was diagnosed with AIDS shortly after it was completed. And, of course, the iconic performer Venus Xtravaganza was murdered at age 23. Her killer has never been found.

The Future

Modern documentaries often feel like video Wikipedia pages, but Paris is Burning is alive and crackling with energy. Its stars like Pepper LaBeija, Venus Xtravaganza and Willi Ninja may be gone now but the spirit of their joy endures.

The film expands on the documentary tradition exemplified by Frederick Wiseman, the Maysles brothers and other groundbreaking practitioners of the form. It’s an exemplar of the axiom that great nonfiction films are also good dramas.

Its characters’ hustling is an important part of the story, and many of them talk openly about the positive and negative aspects of their hustles. Likewise, the film’s depiction of sexual exploitation is both harrowing and eye-opening. And its use of fashion runways and vogue competitions are evocative and intriguing. Paris is Burning is a film for our time, not just because it reveals a forgotten history but because it still feels relevant today. It’s the kind of work that deserves to be in the national canon.

Why Move to Paris?

While moving to Paris may sound dreamy, it is not without its challenges. From snaking lines at grocery stores to crowded metro cars, expats can find it difficult to navigate everyday life in the city of lights.

Luckily, many of these challenges can be overcome with proper planning. This article will explore why moving to paris is a good idea and some tips to help you get settled.

It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Paris is a city of culture and tradition that attracts expats from all over the world. Its rich history has left behind a beautiful mix of old buildings, gardens, plazas, and monuments. Its modern infrastructure is also impressive, as Paris was built on the concept of efficient urban planning. During the 19th century, architect Baron Haussmann razed walls and created broad, wide boulevards.

Parisians are proud of their city, and they often go out of their way to protect it. They also know how to enjoy their food, especially its delicious pastries. The city’s many parks are great places to take a stroll or enjoy a picnic.

Parisians are also known for their renowned educational institutions. In fact, its education system ranks among the best in the world. This is why many expats decide to move to Paris for work and to raise a family. In addition, the working week in Paris is very short, and there are 13 public holidays each year.

It’s a cosmopolitan city

Paris has held the world’s imagination for centuries. It’s a city that has inspired poets, novelists, and musicians. Its iconic monuments have enchanted millions of tourists and captivated writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Today’s Paris is more cosmopolitan than ever, and it’s one of Europe’s most diverse cities.

It’s easy to find a friend in Paris, as the city is home to many expats from all over the world. Its vibrant communities include those from the Maghreb and Latin America. There are also many opportunities to meet other expats at InterNations events and online groups.

Living in Paris can be challenging, however. The city is expensive and noisy, and the streets can be dirty. There is also a high population density, and some people experience culture shock. Expats should prepare for these challenges before moving to Paris. Learning French will help them navigate the city and communicate with locals. It’s also important to research the city before making a final decision.

It’s a beautiful city

From the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, Paris is a beautiful city that has held the world in awe for centuries. It’s been the inspiration for many books, movies, and songs. It’s no wonder more than 30 million tourists visit each year.

Living in Paris isn’t all roses and champagne though. The city is often very crowded and the traffic is bad. It’s also expensive, especially if you live in the center of town.

Another downside is that there is not a lot of green space in the city. Most of the parks are located on the outskirts of the city. This means you have to travel a long way just to see some greenery. Luckily, there are some good restaurants and cafes in the city that offer delicious food. The people in Paris are also friendly and helpful. The cafés are the social hubs of the neighborhoods, where locals come to meet friends and family.

It’s a great place to live

Paris is full of culture and history. It is not just about the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, it has many parks and green spaces where you can take a break from the concrete and have a picnic. In addition, there are also many quirky activities that allow you to discover the city from a different angle.

In addition, the French work culture allows you to build relationships with your coworkers. But you have to be prepared for the lines at the grocery store and packed metro cars. Also, you will have to dodge dog poo while walking around.

Another great thing about living in Paris is the excellent public school system. You will get an amazing education for your children. And, if you speak fluent French, there are many job opportunities for expats in the city. You will also enjoy the short working week and 13 public holidays a year. Moreover, you can easily make friends with other expats thanks to the city’s extensive network of international organizations.

Films Capturing the Essence of America and Loneliness

Films Like Paris Texas

Paris is an East Texas town that traces its roots to the early settlers of Lamar County. It has a strong sense of history and a distinctive main street, with an impressive architectural legacy.

Wim Wenders’ elegy to a particular idea of America — the crumbling vista of endless highways, roadside diners and dilapidated motels — is elevated by Harry Dean Stanton’s weatherbeaten face and Ry Cooder’s swooping slide guitar.

The Searchers

Wim Wenders’s slow-burning masterpiece is a fascinating study of loneliness and family, featuring stunning cinematography, memorable dialogue, and sublime character development. The new Criterion release includes an excellent interview with Shepard, who reveals that the film was mostly a happy accident—Wenders originally started with his Motel Chronicles book, and Shepard supplied the last part of the story, which features Travis talking to himself in the mirror.

The Searchers has many elements that are typical of the Western genre, including a morally corrupt protagonist and overtones of racism. John Wayne stars as Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran who spends years searching for his niece after she’s captured by Comanche Indians. The movie features a deep hatred for Indians—from the racist cavalry leader Martin to Ethan’s own comments about how “livin’ with these Comanches ain’t bein’ alive.”

Despite its overly ambitious plot, the film is an unforgettable modern Western that debunks the John Ford myth and brings it into a more updated perception. It’s also an unabashed love letter to America—which is all the more remarkable considering that it came out in 1984, halfway through the Reagan era when Europe was supposedly anti-American.

Floating Weeds

Floating Weeds isn’t easy for casual film fans to get a grip on, but anyone who can appreciate masterful composition techniques can find much to enjoy in this simple story of itinerant performers and the families they leave behind. If Ozu’s style seems guarded, it’s for good reason – everything he needs to convey is right there in the frame. The director’s use of objects as transition points is perfected here; a bicycle lying by the train becomes the bridge between Kihachi and his former mistress, and later between his son and his wife.

The Criterion DVD features both the 1934 silent version and the 1959 remake in widescreen 1.33:1 transfers, with full-length commentaries by Donald Richie on the first and Roger Ebert on the second. Both films are also included in a dual-DVD keep-case. The earlier film reveals Ozu in the midst of developing his unique mode of expression; the latter, with its quietly devastating premise about the erosion of family bonds, shows him at the pinnacle of his craft.

The Man Who Wasn’t There

Featuring a surprisingly touching performance from Billy Bob Thornton and one of the most memorable opening credits in recent memory, this Coen brothers film is a neo-noir masterpiece. The black-and-white photography and voiceover narration honor classic film noir, while the addition of classical music sets it apart. The Man Who Wasn’t There is also the first film for which director and composer Carter Burwell won an Academy Award.

The film’s final scene lingers in the minds of many viewers. In the last shot, Ed slowly moves towards a woman who has entered the frame. The slow pace of this movement suggests the character’s gradual awakening to his sense of purpose.

Extras on this DVD include a 29-minute interview with Wenders that focuses on his work with Sam Shepard. It also features interviews with the film’s cinematographer Robby Muller, composer Ry Cooder, and actors Harry Dean Stanton and Dennis Hopper. It’s worth checking out just to hear what Wenders has to say about the movie.

The Night of the Hunter

A film that’s as essential to American cinema as it is unique, The Night of the Hunter was met with initial bafflement. However, it eventually became a staple of an era of films in which directors like Truffaut, Scorsese, and Jean-Luc Godard began to push boundaries by integrating influences into something new.

One of the key elements is its use of sound to convey a sense of emptiness that’s hard to replicate with words. Ry Cooder’s soundtrack helps to create a haunting atmosphere with snippets of sounds from the past, such as the call of an owl or chirping crickets.

Criterion’s Blu-ray release offers a great transfer, arguably the best version of the movie that has ever been available on home video. It looks incredibly sharp with a wide contrast and expert blocking. A 38-minute making-of feature is also included. The original DVD featured an open-matte transfer that didn’t quite work, but this new release is a welcome improvement.

Gonzo wild man John Travolta takes down a terrorist cell in From Paris With Love.

October 28, 2023 0 Comments

From Paris With Love

Producer Luc Besson and director Pierre Morel aren’t known for cinematic restraint. But “From Paris With Love” has an entertaining gonzo wild man in John Travolta as a hapless CIA agent.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays James Reece, the uptight personal aide to the ambassador to France who wants to become a CIA agent. He gets his chance when Wax is assigned to help him take down a terrorist cell.

Le Week-End

A British couple in their sixties makes a journey to Paris to rekindle their marriage. This mellow and sometimes bittersweet drama, which is based on a book by Hanif Kureishi, benefits from the talents of the marvelous Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent.

The film has been hailed as a senior version of Richard Linklater’s “Before Midnight” and its romantic predecessors. But it’s not just that. It is a drama that reveals the emotional and sexual life of an age group that doesn’t get much screen time on either the big or small screens.

It would be easy for a movie of this kind to become a turgid slog, but Michell and Kureishi don’t patronize their characters. Rather, they give their viewers the pleasure of watching two well-matched actors ratchet up their tensions and dig up some old, well-worn weaknesses. And in doing so, they unearth a few invaluable truths about the human condition. A sweet-natured and wryly barbed glimpse into warts-and-all intimacy.

Grace Stirs Up a Success

Grace loves baking cupcakes and French macaroons. She and her friends Maddy and Ella do a brisk business selling their creations at Little League games, school fundraisers, etc. When her mom announces that she and Grace will spend a summer in Paris working at her uncle’s ptisserie, Grace can’t wait to show off her new skills.

When she arrives, however, she finds that her family’s old bakery is struggling. She soon realizes that her baking talents and entrepreneurship will be needed to save the day.

While the film has a strong, positive message about following one’s dreams and helping others, its plot is too contrived and the characters are not developed enough to be credible or likable. Its soundtrack reflects nine-year-old Grace’s can-do spirit with uptempo pop songs from genre-hoppers Toby Lightman, Kelli Love, and genre-hopper Nina Storey. The movie was filmed in New England and Budapest, Hungary. This direct-to-video family drama stars Olivia Rodrigo in the title role, with Virginia Madsen, Eloise Webb, and Caitlin Carmichael in supporting roles.

Funny Face

Funny Face is a classic romantic comedy that has become synonymous with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire. The film’s catchy songs, captivating performances, and timeless story continue to delight audiences of all ages.

The 1957 film version of the Gershwin musical, directed by Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) and starring Audrey Hepburn and Kay Thompson. Though it shares the same name as the stage musical, it only features four of the Gershwin songs and has a completely different plot.

Maggie Prescott (Thompson) is a high-fashion magazine editor looking for the next Quality model, and she finds her in the intellectually minded Jo Stockton. She and fashion photographer Dick Avery take over a Greenwich Village bookstore for a photo shoot, much to Jo’s dismay as she tries to sell books. But when he notices her beauty, Dick hires her as a model, and the two begin to fall in love.

An American in Paris

A vivacious American painter struggles to make a name for himself in postwar Paris. In his quest, he finds himself attracted to both a wealthy society woman (Nina Foch) and a French gamine engaged to an older man. This film allowed director Vincente Minnelli to pool his talents with those of star and choreographer Gene Kelly. The result was a rapturous musical not quite like anything else in cinema.

With the help of the Gershwins’ songs, and a story by Alan Jay Lerner, Minnelli created a spectacle dazzling in its vitality and Parisian joie de vivre. He also filled it with inventive production numbers that rework artists Dufy, Utrillo and Toulouse-Lautrec. Kelly and Leslie Caron’s sublime performances made this one of the most memorable and beloved musicals ever. Warner’s blu-ray uses their patented ultra-resolution process to bring this movie to life with breathtaking detail and unsurpassed color. It is the ultimate experience for fans of this masterpiece.

Five French Movies About the City of Love

With trans-Atlantic travel on hold, channel your smitten heart toward France with these movies about the City of Love.

French new waver Agnes Varda paints a wistful, aching portrait of the Belle epoque city in a natural shade of gray. Cleo from 5 to 7 roams the streets awaiting a momentous doctor’s verdict.

Three Colours: Blue

The first film of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Three Colours trilogy, Blue focuses on grief and liberation. Julie, the widow of a composer, finds herself at an impasse after her husband and daughter die in a car accident.

She decides to cut herself off from the world and live life on her own. But she is eventually pulled back into the fold of human interaction by a reclusive judge. Juliette Binoche is stunning in this complex drama. She is a revelation and an inspiration.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

In this enthralling adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel, the film captures the allure of Paris. The recreation of 15th century Paris and Notre-Dame Cathedral is impressive, and the film’s enchanting music lulls audiences into a world of magic.

Baz Luhrmann depicts the Paris of the Belle époque in all its flamboyance and theatricality. From its gastronomic delights to its scandalous nightclub, this movie is full of drama and spell.

A sexy, dog-faced hoodlum and his impossibly waifish American girlfriend tangle in this rose-tinted masterpiece. It’s one of the most iconic french movies ever made, and is a defining moment for Audrey Tautou.

The 400 Blows

The film explores the complexities of unrequited love. Its beautifully-crafted narrative allows viewers to connect with the characters, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding.

Jean-Pierre Leaud’s performance as Antoine Doinel is remarkable. Truffaut cast him after finding his audition in a newspaper, as he saw Leaud as a kindred spirit.

The 400 Blows (Les Quatre Cents Coups) burst on the screen in 1959, introducing the French New Wave movement to international attention and acclaim. Its inventiveness and novelty set a standard for cinema that continues to this day.

Feel-good Paris

In this movie, you can see a Paris that is overflowing with emotion and restlessness. It has a whimsy that can make you laugh out loud and also makes you cry.

Movies about the AIDS crisis often feel melodramatic, but this film balances its gravity with lively dialogue and naturalistic performances. It captures the anger of many Parisians – including Robin Campillo, who starred in this movie – and their determination to not fade away without a fight.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl

A post-modern mix of myth, musical and romance, the film pulsates with every turn. From the gilded ballrooms to the cozy cafes and dazzling satellite streets of Montmartre, it is filled with Paris’s majesty.

Full of jazz riffs and deliberately rough editing, this film is considered one of the first to herald the French New Wave movement. This tale of grief and love follows a paraplegic Parisian aristocrat and his live-in caretaker. The city serves as a catalyst for their healing.

The Intouchables

Despite its oh-so-French backdrop and subtitles, this modern fairy tale based on true events has gone global. The acting talents of Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy prevent the film from falling into any cliches.

Driss, a streetwise Parisian of Senegalese descent, interviews for the job of caring for the wealthy quadriplegic Philippe, and he and Phillipe hit it off. Their bond grows, and they teach each other lessons about responsibility and adventure.

La Vie en Rose

The life of Edith Piaf is portrayed in this fractured mosaic biopic, with the film’s greatest assets being its iconic music and Marion Cotillard’s portrayal. Her singing and every gesture channels Piaf, plus a touch of Judy Garland.

Though it never quite found a rapturous stateside audience, this Oscar-winning French film focuses on the life of a musical icon. It is a sad, poetic and often depressing story of a woman who suffered much but whose passion for her art never died.

The Phantom of the Opera

Jacques Becker’s belle epoque drama of courtesans, can-can dancers and gangland murders depicts Paris like a dream. It’s a film whose message is just as pertinent today as it was in 1932.

Baz Luhrmann’s musical romp is an adaptation of the Leroux novel (though it’s not entirely faithful to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical). It follows Christian, who finds himself drawn toward the hedonistic thrills of Moulin Rouge. Audrey Tautou is unforgettable as Christine, the opera singer reborn in this movie about obsession and tragedy.

The French Connection: A Funny and Heartfelt Look at Relationships in Paris

October 24, 2023 0 Comments

3 Days in Paris Movie Review

Luc Besson is expert at eye-rolling French action movies that wink at their own contrivances and cliches. He brings that skill to this story about mortality, murder for hire and fatherhood.

Delpy may not quite meet the standards of her predecessors Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, but she is a filmmaker to watch.

The Story

A young couple visits the city to experience Paris. As they explore, their relationships and the decisions that shaped them are brought to light.

The film was written, directed and starred by Julie Delpy. It was her second time directing. It is a very funny film. It also has some drama and romance in it.

Jack, a New York interior designer, and Marion, a French photographer, are taking a romantic vacation in Paris. During their stay, they meet their neighbors, Anna and Jeannot, who live upstairs from them. They discover that their cultures clash, from the way they talk to the food they eat.

One of the things that I enjoyed about this movie is how it shows how different people can be even though they are in a relationship. The dialogue was realistic and interesting. It made me think about my own relationships and how they can be improved. I really enjoyed this movie and recommend it to anyone who is looking for a funny, romance comedy.

The Cast

Julie Delpy’s directorial debut is a smart, funny and surprisingly sensitive romcom about a real-life couple’s relationship. Her use of family, friends and even a former boyfriend (Adam Goldberg) gives the film a comfortable feel.

A sprightly and funny rom-com that examines a realistic relationship with an emphasis on culture clash. Delpy has a great flair for creating witty and sharply written scenes that are both comic and heartfelt. Those expecting an awful Woody Allen movie may be disappointed, but those who want to see a more hard-headed take on modern love among educated, upscale young cosmopolitans will find this movie to be a treat.

Jack, an anxious, hypochondriac-prone New Yorker, is vacationing with his breezy Parisian girlfriend Marion in the city of light. What begins as a romantic getaway soon turns into a contemplation of their incompatibility, as they discuss everything from Marion’s coarse temperament with cab drivers to her many lecherous ex-boyfriends. But despite their differences, they still seem to care for one another.

The Rating

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke have made a career out of playing a French-American couple in Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. 2 Days in Paris looks like an unofficial sequel, but instead of the rambling stream-of-conscious philosophising that characterised the Before movies, this movie keeps it tighter and more direct.

The characters aren’t perfect, but they are well rounded and realistic. Whether it’s Marion reducing her daughter’s boyfriend to nervous babbling or Jack beating the crap out of the acrobatic creeps who grope Zoey, their behaviour will resonate with viewers who have experienced similar situations.

The film is a romantic comedy that examines real relationships and the difficulties that can arise from them. It’s a light-hearted and enjoyable movie that will leave you with a smile on your face. Definitely worth seeing.

The Bottom Line

Luc Besson’s wryly funny 3 Days in Paris is the perfect follow-up to his acclaimed Taken trilogy. Rather than focusing on heroic fantasy (as in the previous movies), here he tackles family drama.

The film is a smart comedy with a lot of heart, and Delpy shines throughout. Her repartee with a variety of horrible French cab drivers is a riot.

The movie is a bit overlong, but it never lapses into the rambling, stream-of-consciousness philosophising of the Before trilogy. It’s a tighter, more direct analysis of the problems in a relationship. It’s also a wonderful showcase for the city of Paris, and the actors make the most of the location. It’s a must-see for anyone who has ever been to the city of love.

9 Movie Part 2 Review

9 movie part 2 is a film that explores the dangers of war and unrestrained technology. It is a complex movie with gorgeous animation and a compelling narrative.

The movie stars Sharlto Copley as Wikus van der Merwe. The 2009 movie explores the story of several small homunculi that are released into a post-cataclysmic world. They are hunted by the Cat Beast and also battle the dormant Fabrication Machine.

What happened to 2?

A frail inventor, 2 represents humanity’s curiosity and big-heartedness. He’s protective of his Stitchpunk comrades, especially 9.

In the movie, 2 is captured by the Cat Beast and is sent into the sewers, where he’s killed by a pipe. His lifeless body is used by the Seamstress to hypnotize the other stitchpunks.

Neill Blomkamp’s crowd-pleasing sci-fi/body horror mashup District 9 has a lot of fans, and rumors of a sequel have swirled for years. Sharlto Copley, who starred in the film as Wikus van de Merwe, has even hinted at one. But there hasn’t been much movement on the official Facebook page since 2017. Maybe Chappie will finally bring this long-awaited sequel to life. Watch the teaser trailer below.

What happened to 5?

5 is an assisting, kind-hearted inventor who is protective of the others. He can easily construct new gadgets and he built the telescope with 7. He also holds the same traits as the Scientist: humanity, caring, big-heartedness and sincerity.

In the short film, 5, like 9 has a numbered skin and keeps junk and usable items inside his fabric skin for convenience. He can be seen holding the Mirrored Talisman in the 2005 short.

While hiding from the Cat Beast, 5 is attacked and its paws grab a hold of The Talisman. As the large rag doll struggles, its soul is sucked into the talisman leaving him a lifeless rag doll. He then tells 9 that he knows where to find answers. 9 complies with 6’s wishes and runs to the factory.

What happened to 7?

The courageous rag doll 9 finds herself in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity’s survival depends on her unique leadership abilities. Academy Award-nominated short filmmaker Shane Acker expands his fable into this feature film.

The frail inventor 2 is a kind and caring companion, especially towards 9 and 5; he sewed up their impaled leg after they were attacked by the Winged Beast. He wears a large, old-fashioned key around his neck, which he holds when he is afraid or upset.

When he tries to place the Cat Beast’s talisman into the Fabrication Machine, 7 reprimands him for his thoughtlessness; she later sees his soul being sucked out of his body and into the machine. She is also protective of 3 and 4, acting like a motherly figure to them.

What happened to 8?

The movie focuses on 9 and the other stitchpunks who try to stop the Brain from destroying their world. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where robots roam the land intent on human extinction. 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good and that they need to take the offensive.

Despite his fear, 2 insists on being the lookout and takes a position inside a broken can. As he waits, 9 begins to draw symbols on the inside of his fabric body. Suddenly, a large snakelike Beast appears and attempts to hypnotize 2. With the help of 5, 2 fights the Beast off, saving 9. The Beast then notices the Talisman. It grabs it and carries off with it.

What happened to 9?

Director Acker has stated that he is open to the idea of a sequel, and that the movie has shown him that animation can move beyond G- and PG-rated films that are all about princesses and fairy tales. 9 is the youngest of the rag dolls and symbolizes humanity, big-heartedness, thoughtfulness, and sincerity.

9 awakens to find the world destroyed by a machine that hunts down and consumes organic life. As he wanders, the little homunculi (numbered 1-9) come to his aid. He explains to them that the scientist made the machine and split his soul into nine parts that were placed in the rag dolls. The talisman they have will allow them to stop the Brain forever. 1 reluctantly agrees. The rag dolls run as the Machine approaches. Fortunately, it gets stuck in barbed wire, giving them time to hide.
